MY BEST HORROR MOVIE OF 2013

Faith vs evil
NAME: The Conjuring
DIRECTION: James Wan
GENRE: Horror, mystery
CAST: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lilli Taylor

Before The Conjuring, James Wan has directed other chilling horror movies. The Amity-ville Horror Story is one of the noted ones. Both these are based on true stories of evil souls troubling family members of their then ‘home’.
The film is set in the early 1970s where a family of five girls and their parents moved into a large estate house in the Rhode Island. Just after a fortnight of their settlement in their new home, strange things begin to occur. At first the paranormal activities kill their pet dog Sandy. But the evil soul has other plans for the disturbed family. The main point of the film is, like the Amity-ville Horror Story, the mother seeks help from renowned teachers researching paranormal activities. Things get harder after they land in the house and strange things start to unfold.
The films tries to convey the message that, like two faces of a coin, evil things exist just as God exist in the world. Moreover, like a typical Christian film, the film preaches the teaching of Jesus Christ. Then another important theme shown is the power of love and belief in oneself. Because the power of love and belief made all the difference in the end.
While watching the, it’s difficult to guess which way something strange is going to happen unlike other horror movies. Because other typical horror movies make us able to guess what is going to come or appear suddenly. The camera angles are close to perfection making the old theme of exorcism and haunting all the more interesting and new. Because the scene where the witch’s hanging body is shown is quite unannounced and shocking. The earlier scene of the children playing ‘hide and clap’ is also very beautifully used to make the audience run away from their seats. Another important aspect of the film is the lighting. Like any other horror movie, there dim lighting, grey lighting but there is no problem in visualizing the on-going scenes.
However, unlike other horror movies background score does not enhance the scary-nature of the film. Though it does not quite play with music, the three claps will stay in our ears for quite some time. James Wan has successfully directed The Conjuring for all those horror lovers unlike his previous horror movies ‘The Insidious’. The characters have played every single detail quite well. Audience can enjoy the movie with some warm clothes as it’s going to be quite chilly inside the theater although it may be sunny outside.
